Welcome Jim Stachowiak!

(Mi)2 welcomes our new project coordinator, Jim Stachowiak, a Michigan native who returns to his home state via University of Iowa where he directed the Iowa Center for Assistive Technology Education and Research (ICATER). ICATER is a technology and universal design resource to build learner capacity and increase access to learning opportunities. Jim will guide our efforts to increase access to mathematics for all students in Michigan and looks forward to meeting our (Mi)2 network of educators throughout the upcoming year. Welcome, Jim!

RESCHEDULED: 2014 (Mi)2 Facilitator Reunion

Who: All facilitators trained to implement Enhancing Mathematics Instruction for Students with Learning Difficulties

When: Tuesday, August 5, 2014, 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Where: Hope College, Holland, MI, 49423 (in conjunction with the MCTM Annual Conference Pre-Conference Institutes)

Tentative Agenda:

  • Tools for Implementing the Course with Fidelity and Getting Desired Outcomes
  • Tools for Sustaining and Expanding the Work
  • Connecting to District and County Math Resources

Math for All and MCTM

(Mi)2 will host a Facilitator Institute for Math for All, a professional learning course for math and special educators of students in grades K-2 and 3-5. Please join us to preview the course and meet the developers at our MCTM Pre-Conference Institute.

Formative Assessment for Common Core Math Content Standards

CPALMS offers the Mathematics Formative Assessment System (MFAS), which includes free formative assessment tasks and rubrics aligned to Common Core content and practice standards in grades K-3 (and, coming soon, grades 4-8, Algebra and Geometry scheduled to be released in June 2014). These are designed to help teachers understand student thinking so that teaching can be adapted to improve student achievement.

Math Around Michigan

Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) Annual Conference

The 2014 MCTM Conference is being held Wednesday-Thursday, August 6-7 at Hope College in Holland, with the pre-conference institutes being held on Tuesday, August 5.

Detroit Area Council of Teachers of Mathematics (DACTM): Speaker Proposal Deadline Extended

The 2014 Detroit Area Science and Math Conference, a joint offering from DACTM and Metropolitan Detroit Science Teachers Association, will be held Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Woodhaven High School. Speaker proposals focused on math education, or math AND science education, are being accepted through August 3, 2014. This is an opportunity to share your knowledge, experiences, expertise, and enthusiasm with others. Presenter information can be completed online.

MCTM Book Study is Under Way

The online book club is a FREE opportunity for any educator in Michigan. This summer’s book is Developing Essential Understanding of Mathematical Reasoning: PreK-Grade 8 and/or Developing Essential Understanding of Proof and Proving: Grades 9-12 which are available from NCTM. The book club began on June 23, but it is not too late to join. If you are interested in joining, email Kevin Dykema at [log in to unmask] and he will add you to the list of other educators from throughout Michigan looking at the progression of mathematical reasoning and proving from PreK-12.

Oakland Schools Announces 2014-2015 Math Professional Learning Opportunities

Oakland Schools will offer a variety of professional learning opportunities for general education and special education math teachers, and principals, and open to educators both in and out of district. For a full list of opportunities, cost, and registration, check out their flyer.

Mini Math Conference: Teacher to Teacher

The Great Lakes Bay Region invites you to an interactive day of sharing mathematical strategies aligned to the Common Core State Standards for your grade level. Attend sessions where area classroom practitioners will present strategies that were successful in their classroom. Participants will learn new strategies and take time to plan how they will implement these strategies during the upcoming school year. For details, cost and registration, checkout their flyer.

Delta Math Team Training Session

Delta Math, a Response to Intervention program developed and researched at the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD), will offer three Team Training Sessions throughout the 2014/2015 school year for building teams implementing Delta Math. The first offering will be August 12, 2014. Registration and details can be found at their website. Informational sessions are available, as needed, for sites interested in learning more about Delta Math and can be scheduled by contacting Michael Klavon, project lead, [log in to unmask].
